THE HAZELNUT GROVE QUILTS (HGQs) CATALOG
The following 16 tarp quilts were designed by current and past residents of Hazelnut Grove, Portland's city-sanctioned intentional community of tiny homes and tents. Located on a small triangle of land between N. Greeley and N. Interstate near Kaiser and Adidas, just north of the Rose Quarter/Moda Center, with breathtaking views of the Fremont Bridge, the Willamette River and the SW Hills, and bike paths on two of its three sides, the Hazelnut Grove community has inspired no shortage of wrath from its surrounding neighbors, and no shortage of support from those same neighbors and the "housie" community at large.
My role in the Hazelnut Grove support team is to host the residents each Sunday for Bath + Art Time at my apartment, though it's also hair cutting time, computer using time, cell phone charging time, loving on Daisy dog time, cooking food time, and, in general, relaxing outside of the rain time. While the residents were initially reluctant to participate in the art making, as our trust grew and our confidence with and in one another built up, art started happening. The tangible results of the first three months of Bath + Art Time are these quilts. The intangible results are far too many to enumerate fully. It's been a mutually restorative experience.

The Hazelnut Grove artists receive the full profits from their work (minus $30 to reimburse the artist for framing, materials and labor). Payment may be in the form of cash, check or PayPal. Out of compassion for the already stressful lives of the Hazelnut Grove residents--who often do not have bank accounts, identification to cash checks, or access to PayPal technology--we respectfully request all local purchases to be made in cash so we can get it promptly to the residents. While PayPal and check are sufficient for out-of-town buyers, it adds an extra 5-7 day delay of transferring funds and withdrawing them to get residents their money.
A NOTE ABOUT NAMES: We have chosen to list the Hazelnut Grove residents by their expressed first name name. Sometimes this is their legal name, sometimes this is their "street name" (ex. Loki, Donut), sometimes this is the most recent identity they've chosen (ex. Izzy has been Izzy, Lizzie, Thor, and Stephanie), sometimes this is their camp name (ex. White Mike, Hawaiian Mike, New Mike). We have omitted the last names of all residents out of respect for their privacy. While most Hazelnut Grove residents do not have criminal histories, some do. While some Hazelnut Grove residents have strong ties to their family of origin, others do not. It is our intention, then, to carefully balance the need to protect their identities with the need to celebrate the success of their work.
MORE INFO? If you are interested in the artists' intentions behind pieces or would like to know more about the artists, please contact me at [email protected]. I am usually with the residents from 12-6 p.m. on Sundays at my place and visit them 1-2 times a week down at Hazelnut Grove. The artists look forward to being in touch with the individuals who purchase their work. They are very grateful, excited to share their stories, and they all want you to know they're spending the money on good things (ex. one is buying more edible native plants for the camp, another is putting it towards materials for his tiny home, another is getting a cell phone to contact family, another is flying home to see his son graduate from high school, and the list goes on).
WANT TO HELP? Hazelnut Grove is always seeking cash donations, lumber and building supplies, food, gravel, propane, water, generators, cell phones, etc. They are fairly well stocked when it comes to clothes and hygiene products, though individual needs do arise at time. The main thing Hazelnut Grove needs is more lumber, building supplies, and gravel so they can continue to build 30+ tiny homes before winter comes. Stay up to date on the Hazelnut Grove FB page.
