QUILTS FOR COST-BURDENED RENTERS (QFCBRs) CATALOG
For the first phase of Sharing the Scraps each of the 40 quilts in the QFCRB series was priced at the exact amount of one individual cost-burdened renter's rent increase (plus $30 to reimburse the artist for framing, materials and labor). For the first phase the full profits from these quilts take the form of a one-time no-questions-asked micro-grant, which goes directly to each cost-burdened renter to help them offset the burden of their rent increases. For the second phase of Sharing The Scraps renters receive a flat $100 micro-grant from a $248 flat rate--the average rent increase in the survey--for each quilt sold, with the artist and curator each taking a cut of what remains from the sales revenue. All quilts measure 12-14" square and come float-mounted in a 20" x 20" shadowbox frame.
40 QFCBRs participants were recruited via convenience sampling. They were asked to fill out an online survey which was distributed throughout local housing advocacy groups, and through friends and friends of friends on social media. Most participants were unknown to the artist. The average rent increase in survey was $212, with some increases as low as $50 and others as high as $750. Everyone who filled out the survey had a quilt made in their name. This housing-assistance micro-grant project *may* continue in perpetuity through a *potential* future partnership with the Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT). Stay tuned for details.
